FAQ

everything YoU NEED TO KNOW

Spray foam insulation is a type of insulation material made from polyurethane, isocyanate, or a blend of the two. When sprayed, these components chemically react to expand and harden, creating a closed-cell or open-cell foam barrier that provides excellent thermal insulation and air sealing properties.
Unlike traditional insulation materials like fiberglass or cellulose, spray foam expands when applied, filling even the tiniest gaps and crevices. This ensures a superior air seal, preventing energy loss and offering higher R-values (thermal resistance) per inch.

The two primary types are open-cell and closed-cell spray foam:

  • Open-Cell: Lighter, softer, and offers sound-dampening qualities. Generally less expensive but has a lower R-value per inch.
  • Closed-Cell: Denser and more rigid, providing a higher R-value per inch. Additionally, it adds structural integrity and is resistant to water.

Many modern spray foams are designed to be eco-friendly. They can reduce energy consumption by preventing air leaks, leading to less energy waste. However, it’s essential to choose products that have low or no ozone-depleting potential (ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP).

When properly installed and protected, spray foam insulation can last the lifetime of your home or building, often upwards of 20-30 years. It generally does not sag, settle, or degrade under normal conditions.

While there are DIY kits available, it’s recommended to have spray foam insulation installed by trained professionals. Incorrect installation can result in gaps, over-expansion, or health risks from exposure to the chemicals.
Initially, spray foam insulation can be more costly than traditional forms of insulation. However, because of its superior insulating properties and longevity, it can result in significant energy savings over time, making it a cost-effective choice in the long run.

Yes, especially open-cell spray foam, which is excellent for sound dampening. It can minimize airborne sound transmission through walls, ceilings, and floors.

Closed-cell spray foam is impermeable to water, making it resistant to mold growth. Open-cell foam, while more permeable, also significantly reduces the likelihood of mold as it doesn’t retain water.

Absolutely! Spray foam insulation can be particularly beneficial in older homes, which often lack effective insulation and have numerous gaps and cracks.
